Being Adventist, part i

As some of you may know, I grew up Adventist. While I don’t actively practice and adhere to many of the fundamental beliefs, there’s no escaping the many positive influences that growing up Adventist has had on my life. For that I will always be grateful.

This morning I got an e-mail from dad. Four short lines:

Ladies,
All God’s children have a home.
Matt

This is one of many reasons I love my parents so much and why I am proud to be their daughter.

As for the movie, I can’t wait for it to come out.

One of the many reasons I feel so at home with your (our) family. Your parents always look for the good and positive in everyone and every situation.

    That’s so utterly beautiful.

There’s an excellent documentary, “Trembling Before G-d”, that explores the same subject matter within the Orthodox Jewish community. It’s a hard movie for me to watch, but there are also moments that show the best of my people, in exactly the spirit your dad said so eloquently.

I see the documentary is viewable online. I will definitely check it out.

Rachel, I’ve been visiting your website for a few years now, never realizing you had an Adventist background. I too was raised SDA and spent most of my life very connected to the denomination–definitely part of the culture. In the last ten years I’ve been much more detached, but you know it’s kind of like being Jewish–part of my heritage. I’ve heard of this movie for a while now, and look forward to seeing it. Your dad sounds like a lovely, lovely person. Like my parents, devout SDA’s themselves. We are ALL God’s children. (Would love to hear more of your life story.)
