About Rachel James

Like many college students in 1997, my first website was hosted on Geocities. In 1998, shortly after moving to the Netherlands, we bought our first domain via Dreamhost.

It was also right around this time that I bought my first digital camera from Olympus (1.3 megapixel sensor, 4MB SM card) and a Canon EOS SLR. Many many photos were taking with both cameras before I realised my passion lies with analogue photography.

Since then, I’ve shot and posted hundreds and hundreds of photographs on this website. My primary goal has always been to document — through photography — the simple, banal, everyday scenes that make up Dutch daily life. Not much has changed in the 12-years this website (under different domains) has been online.

My photographs are taken with a variety of cameras: Leica M6, LOMO L-CA, Nikon D300, Nikon F100, Norita 66, Polaroid Automatic 230, Polaroid Automatic 250, Polaroid SLR 680, and Polaroid SX-70. I am pretty much true to Fuji, but I never pass up a sale on Kodak Portra. Here’s what’s in my bag at the moment.

Photographer. Web Designer. Wonder Woman.

My name is Rachel James. I live in the Netherlands with my untypically Dutch husband, Marcel, and spend my days pushing pixels and shooting weddings to fund my analogue photography addiction. I can curl my tongue, am a classically trained pianist, and can eat lasagna every day of the week and never grow tired of it. I played basketball in college, was afraid of dogs until I was in my twenties, and would build my dream home on a couple acres of land somewhere on the Olympic Peninsula.

Welcome to my site!
